Roblox Just Made it Easier to Publish Games: Q&A with Roblox Senior Director Jim Meenan

Today, Roblox announced that they were making publishing games easier on the platform:
Invite 10 people to test a game before it goes public
Answer a single question rather than complete the full Maturity Questionnaire
A unified, guided publishing flow in Creator Hub
I had an opportunity to ask the Roblox product lead Jim Meenan some additional questions creators may have. Here's what he had to say...
Q: What was the biggest friction point Roblox creators faced under the old publishing flow, and how does this new flow make it easier to publish games on the platform?
"Over the past few years, we’ve made a lot of changes focused on protecting our youngest users. We know that some of these features, while critical, created some challenges for creators, and we're responding to those concerns with changes today that also match our current safety posture."
"By streamlining upfront questionnaires and unifying our Studio workflow, we’re taking care of the operational heavy lifting. This allows creators to get their games live, gather player feedback, and iterate faster than ever, all backed by the platform's multi-layered safety infrastructure."
Q: With creators only needing to answer one required question in the maturity questionnaire, how can you ensure safety remains the top priority when publishing?
"Simplifying the questionnaire is about removing redundant manual work, not reducing oversight. Behind the scenes, we enforce multi-layered safety through automated content moderation systems, real-time safety checks, age check technology, and content gating. Every game published on the platform must adhere to our Community Standards."
"Users over 16 can access more content than others on Roblox in general, so reducing friction to get them content faster while still adhering to our Standards is a first step to streamlining the flow for creators while maintaining a higher level of protection for our younger players. With this change, we can maintain strict safety controls across all demographics while allowing creators to iterate and launch more quickly to our oldest players."
Q: Early testing with 10 people is great. Could we see this limit raised in the future?
"We view early testing and fast feedback loops as essential parts of successful game development. 10-person early testing provides an immediate way for creators to sanity-check mechanics and collaborate with friends, and we’ll continue to explore more ways to accelerate the feedback loops creators rely on. As we expand our live-ops tools, server infrastructure, and developer workspace capabilities, raising playtest thresholds and giving studios more flexible ways to run closed/open betas with larger player pools is an area we’re exploring."
Q: Are there any plans for an alternative expedited review process that doesn't cost Robux?
"Expedited reviews are designed for professional studios that need a guaranteed launch date to line up with outside marketing campaigns, while maintaining the safety checks our users expect. The fee is an intentional hurdle for bad actors, but is fully refundable for creators working in good faith making it a cost-neutral option. For creators who want to break into Select with a lower upfront fee, our Engagement targeting for Sponsored Ads offers an even more efficient path to attract highly engaged players."
"That said, we hear the community loud and clear regarding developer access and friction. We are actively evaluating ways to scale our automated moderation tools so that we can reduce costs and streamline evaluation timelines organically for all creators."
Q: Over the last year, many changes have been made to publishing and creating on the platform. What is the best piece of advice you can give Roblox creators (both new and veteran) trying to navigate these changes?
"We are constantly balancing maximum creator freedom with working to uphold a high bar for user safety. At RDC, we made two clear commitments to our community: we will never compromise on safety, and we will also do whatever we can to make creation easier for well-intentioned creators on Roblox."
"To navigate these updates smoothly and set your games up for success, I recommend all creators leverage the new 'Manage Audience' page on Creator Hub. We built this dedicated page for every game so you have transparency into the latest compliance requirements, safety guidelines, and age-gating settings. Make it a routine part of your workflow to check this hub so you can easily optimize your setup and maximize your game's global reach. We’ll continue to remove friction for creators across both policy and technology, like reducing the High-Engagement Player (HEP) requirement down to 100. And these changes will all be reflected on this page."
